Afzaal started his career at Nottinghamshire C.C He caught the eye in June 2000 with a vicious 151 against Worcestershire, specifically Glenn McGrath. A year later, he was deservedly selected in the England teams for the first Ashes Test. He hit an attractive and classy fifty at The Oval, and was chosen for England’s tour to India and New Zealand. Well organised and a classy left-hander and also someone who can destroy an attack, and at his best against both pace and spin. Afzaal straight-drives like an angel. Afzaal is considered to being a batting allrounder, his left-arm spin acts mostly as a partnership-breaker but is truly effective.

In 2004 he opted for a change and moved down to Northants where he has continued to be a solid batsman in both Championship and one-day cricket and he topped 1000 runs in 2005 and 2006 before moving to Surrey on a three-year deal in 2007\. The shift to London started promisingly with consistent performances and was awarded the one-day captaincy.

He was extremely unfortunate not to be handed more of a chance after his last innings being a fifty against the legendary bowling attack of Australia, but no doubt Afzaal had the potential of being one of England’s finest middle order batsman. Afzaal currently holds a level 3 coaching badge and has been working in the Masters champions league with Capricorn commanders and has also been helping with the Nottinghamshire T20 campaign in 2015 working under Peter Moores. Known as one of the best players of spin around the county circuit, no doubt he will be a great signing.
